How HIPS Works as Dissolvable Support

HIPS prints at similar temperatures to ABS (230–245°C nozzle, 90–110°C bed), which makes it the perfect support companion in dual-extrusion setups. After printing, submerge your part in a limonene solution and the HIPS supports dissolve completely — no cutting, no sanding, no scarring on the final part. This is the same workflow used in professional and industrial FDM printers.

HIPS as a Standalone Material

Beyond support duties, HIPS is a lightweight, impact-resistant material that machines and sands easily. It accepts paint and adhesives well, making it popular for architectural models, signage, and cosplay props where post-processing matters. HIPS vs. PVA — Choosing the Right Support Material

HIPS dissolves in limonene and pairs with ABS. PVA filament dissolves in plain water and pairs with PLA. If you print mostly PLA, choose PVA. If you print ABS for functional parts, HIPS is your match.
