Dynalabs HIPS Filament 1.75mm — Dissolvable Support Material and Standalone Filament

HIPS (High Impact Polystyrene) serves a dual purpose in 3D printing. Its primary use is as a dissolvable support material for ABS — print your complex ABS model with HIPS supports, then dissolve the supports in d-Limonene (a citrus-based solvent) for perfectly clean results with no support marks. Its secondary use is as a standalone printing material that's lightweight, easy to sand, and excellent for large models. At $14.99 per kilogram in 6 colors, it's a must-have for dual-extrusion ABS workflows.

Available in Black, White, Blue, Green, Red, and Natural. When used as support material, color doesn't matter — it dissolves away. When used as a standalone material, the 6-color range gives you options for lightweight props and models.

How to Dissolve HIPS Supports

After printing your dual-material ABS+HIPS part, submerge it in d-Limonene at room temperature. Dissolution takes 4–24 hours depending on support volume and surface area. Gently agitate the solution periodically to speed the process. D-Limonene is a natural citrus extract — it smells like oranges and is much safer than acetone. After dissolution, rinse the part in water and let it dry. The result is a perfectly clean ABS part with no support scars.

HIPS as a Standalone Material

HIPS is 17% lighter than PLA (1.04 g/cm³ vs 1.24 g/cm³), which makes it excellent for large models, cosplay helmets, and architectural models where weight matters. It sands easily and smoothly with 200–400 grit sandpaper, accepts spray paint well, and can be vapor-smoothed with d-Limonene for a glossy finish. Print settings are similar to ABS — enclosed printer recommended, 230°C nozzle, 100°C bed.

Pro Tips

For dual extrusion with ABS, set both materials to the same bed temperature (100°C) and use similar nozzle temperatures (ABS: 240°C, HIPS: 235°C). This prevents thermal stress between the two materials. In your slicer, set HIPS as the support material and enable "interface layers" for a cleaner separation surface. Buy d-Limonene in bulk from chemical suppliers — it's significantly cheaper than small bottles from 3D printing stores.

Best Applications

As support: Complex ABS parts with overhangs, internal cavities, bridges, and geometries impossible to print without support. As standalone: Lightweight cosplay pieces, large architectural models, display props, sand-and-paint projects, and any application where low weight and easy post-processing are valued.
