PVA (Polyvinyl Alcohol) filament is a water-soluble support material designed for dual-extrusion 3D printers. Print complex geometries with overhangs, bridges, and internal cavities using PVA supports, then dissolve them completely in warm water — no cutting, no sanding, no damage to your final part. The result is clean, professional-quality prints that would be impossible with breakaway supports alone.

How PVA Support Works

In a dual-extrusion setup, your primary extruder prints the model in PLA while the second extruder prints support structures in PVA. After printing, place the part in warm water (50–70°C) for 2–12 hours depending on support volume. The PVA dissolves completely, leaving only your PLA part with perfect surface quality where the supports used to be.

PVA vs. HIPS — Which Support Material?

PVA dissolves in plain water and is designed to pair with PLA and PLA-based filaments. HIPS filament dissolves in limonene (a citrus solvent) and pairs with ABS. If you primarily print PLA, PVA is the clear choice — water is safer, cheaper, and more convenient than chemical solvents.

Storage and Handling

PVA is extremely hygroscopic — it absorbs moisture from the air rapidly, which degrades print quality. Store in a sealed bag with desiccant immediately after use. For best results, print directly from a filament dry box. If your spool has absorbed moisture, dry it at 45–50°C for 12–18 hours before printing.

Print Settings

Nozzle: 185–200°C (PVA degrades above 210°C). Bed: 45–60°C. Print speed: 20–40mm/s for supports. Retraction: enable generous retraction (4–6mm) to prevent oozing. Interface layers between PVA and PLA should be set to 2–4 layers in your slicer for clean separation.
