Thermistors & Heating Cartridges

Fix Temperature Errors Fast

Thermistors and heating cartridges are the two smallest, cheapest parts in your hotend assembly — and the two most likely to cause a complete print stoppage. A failed thermistor triggers thermal runaway protection and shuts your printer down immediately. A burned-out heating cartridge means your hotend simply won't reach temperature. Both are quick swaps that take minutes to replace, which is exactly why every 3D printer owner should keep spares on hand at all times.

Thermistors — Temperature Sensing

The thermistor reads hotend temperature and feeds that data to your printer's control board in real time. The most common type is the NTC 100K, compatible with the vast majority of FDM printers including Ender 3, Prusa MK series, Creality CR-10, and most BTT board setups. When a thermistor fails, your printer typically throws a thermal runaway error or displays wildly inaccurate temperature readings. Replacement takes under five minutes and costs a fraction of any other hotend component.

Heating Cartridges — Generating the Heat

The heating cartridge is a resistive element that converts electrical power into the heat your hotend needs to melt filament. Most printers run either 12V or 24V cartridges — always match the voltage to your printer's power supply. A failing cartridge typically shows up as an inability to reach target temperature, slow heat-up times, or intermittent temperature drops during printing.

Always Keep Spares

Thermistors and heating cartridges combined cost less than $10 for a set. They have no practical shelf life and take up almost no space. A printer stopped by a failed thermistor at the start of a long overnight print is a frustrating and entirely avoidable situation. Stock a spare set before you need one.

Related Parts

Thermistors and heating cartridges live inside your hotend assembly — if you're replacing these, inspect the heater block and heat break at the same time. For the extruder feeding filament through the assembly, see extruders. Back to the full 3D Printer Parts & Accessories guide.
