Dynalabs PLA Basic Filament 2.85mm — For Ultimaker, Lulzbot & 3mm Printers

Not every 3D printer uses 1.75mm filament. If you own an Ultimaker, Lulzbot, or any printer that requires 2.85mm (often marketed as 3mm) filament, the Dynalabs PLA Basic 2.85mm delivers the same reliable print quality as our 1.75mm version — just in the larger diameter your printer needs. Available in Black and White at $12.99 per kilogram.

The 2.85mm diameter is held to a tight ±0.03mm tolerance, which is critical for printers like the Ultimaker S-series that rely on precise volumetric extrusion calculations. Inconsistent diameter causes over- or under-extrusion artifacts that ruin surface quality. Dynalabs maintains this consistency across the entire spool.

Key Specifications

Material PLA (Polylactic Acid)
Diameter 2.85mm ± 0.03mm
Spool Weight 1kg (2.2 lbs)
Colors Available Black, White
Nozzle Temperature 190–220°C
Bed Temperature 0–60°C
Print Speed 40–80mm/s
Density 1.24 g/cm³

Recommended Print Settings

For Ultimaker printers, use the default PLA profile in Cura — 200°C nozzle, 60°C bed. Lulzbot users should start at 205°C. The larger filament diameter means your extruder pushes more material per rotation, so retraction settings need adjustment: start with 4–6mm retraction distance at 25mm/s retraction speed. Reduce if you see gaps after travel moves.

Pro Tips

2.85mm filament is thicker and stiffer than 1.75mm, which makes it less prone to tangling and easier to handle for larger print farms. However, it's more sensitive to moisture — the thicker cross-section absorbs water deeper into the filament core. Always store in a dry box and consider printing from a filament dryer for best results, especially in humid climates like Miami.

Best Applications

Same as standard PLA — prototypes, models, decorative items, functional household parts, and educational projects. The 2.85mm format is particularly popular in professional and educational settings where Ultimaker printers are the standard.
