E3D ObXidian High Flow Nozzle for Prusa Nextruder — MK4, MK4S, MK3.9, XL, CORE One — Tool Steel + E3DLC™ Coating, Drop-In Upgrade

The E3D ObXidian High Flow Nozzle is the definitive nozzle upgrade for Prusa Nextruder-based printers. Co-developed with Prusa, it combines two capabilities that are usually a trade-off: ultra-high wear resistance for abrasive filaments and increased volumetric flow for faster printing — in the exact same external form factor as a standard Nextruder nozzle. Drop-in replacement, no hardware modifications, no new mounts, no fan duct changes. Just swap and print.

Compatible with: Prusa MK4, MK4S, MK3.9, MK3.9S, XL, CORE One, CORE One L. Available in 0.4mm, 0.6mm, and 0.8mm diameters.

⚠️ Compatible with Prusa Nextruder only. Not compatible with older Prusa extruders (MK3S+, MK2, MMU setups with non-Nextruder hotends).
⚠️ Z offset adjustment may be required when swapping between nozzle sizes or from a standard to High Flow nozzle. Recalibrate first layer after any nozzle change.
⚠️ Max temperature: 300°C. This is not the ObXidian 500 variant. For materials requiring above 300°C, see the ObXidian 500 series.
⚠️ Some ultra-aggressive fillers will wear even ObXidian. See the compatibility note in the materials section below.

All-Metal Filament Guide — No PTFE Anywhere in the Nextruder Path

Standard Nextruder nozzles already eliminated PTFE from the hot zone, but the all-metal filament guide in these E3D ObXidian nozzles takes that further — the entire filament path through the Nextruder is metal from entry to tip. No PTFE liner, no tube degradation at elevated temperatures, no off-gassing during high-temp material sessions. This improves long-term print reliability at sustained temperatures and makes nozzle swaps significantly faster since there's no PTFE tube to re-seat or worry about during the change.

High-Flow Internal Geometry — More Speed Without a Bigger Nozzle

The flow bottleneck in most nozzles isn't the orifice — it's heat transfer. If filament passes through the melt zone faster than it can fully liquefy, you get under-extrusion at speed even if your hotend temperature reads correctly. E3D's High Flow ObXidian addresses this at the geometry level: a custom internal profile increases the surface area inside the nozzle, giving filament more contact time with the heated metal as it moves toward the tip. The result is higher achievable volumetric flow from the same hotend — letting your Prusa MK4 or XL run faster without sacrificing extrusion consistency. Unlike E3D's older high-flow approaches (Volcano, SuperVolcano), this achieves higher throughput with no change to nozzle external dimensions — your existing mount and fan duct setups remain untouched.

ObXidian™ — Tool Steel Insert + E3DLC™ Coating

Standard brass nozzles wear measurably when printing glass fiber, carbon fiber, or glow-in-the-dark filaments. Hardened steel nozzles do better, but still degrade over sustained abrasive use. ObXidian uses a fundamentally different approach: a tool steel insert combined with E3DLC™ (Diamond-Like Carbon) coating — a proprietary surface treatment that delivers wear resistance orders of magnitude higher than any other E3D nozzle, and significantly beyond generic hardened steel options. The E3DLC coating also has inherent non-stick properties, which means considerably less filament build-up on the nozzle exterior — cleaner tip, fewer print crashes from stringing buildup, and less time cleaning between material changes.

Material Compatibility — What ObXidian Handles and What It Doesn't

ObXidian is the correct nozzle for the vast majority of abrasive filaments:

Recommended PLA-CF, PETG-CF, ABS-CF, ASA, standard Nylon (PA6, PA12), glow-in-the-dark, filled composites with standard particle size
Supported PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA, TPU, PC, PP — all standard non-abrasive filaments
⚠️ Use with caution Polymaker PolyMide PA612-CF, PA6-CF, PA6-GF, PA12-CF and other ultra-aggressive fiber-filled engineering grades — these can cause wear even on ObXidian. Check filament manufacturer's recommended minimum nozzle size before printing
⚠️ Particle size warning Some filled materials have particles close to or larger than 0.4mm — attempting to print these through a 0.4mm nozzle significantly increases jam risk. Use 0.6mm or larger for heavily filled composites

For the most aggressive abrasive filaments, E3D's ObXidian 500 series (rated to 500°C, at least 5× more wear resistant) is the appropriate step up.

Easy Identification — Size Engraved on Every Nozzle

Each nozzle has its orifice diameter laser-engraved directly into the body. If you run multiple nozzle sizes — 0.4mm for detail, 0.6mm for speed, 0.8mm for draft printing — you'll never accidentally install the wrong one or dig through unlabeled nozzle collections trying to identify a size by eye.

When Do You Need This?

This is the right nozzle if you're running a Prusa MK4, MK4S, or XL and regularly printing with carbon fiber or glass fiber-filled materials — or if you want to push your print speeds higher without upgrading your hotend. It's also the correct choice if you've been burning through brass nozzles on abrasive filaments and want a nozzle that lasts through sustained production use. If you print a mix of standard and abrasive materials and want one nozzle that handles both without compromise, ObXidian High Flow is the answer.
