PEI Ultem Filament — Where the Material Hierarchy Ends

Most engineers never need PEI. Most engineers also never need to print parts that survive 170°C in continuous service, pass aerospace flame tests, resist automotive fluids without degrading, or maintain their mechanical properties in environments where every other 3D printing material has long since failed. If you're here, you're probably not most engineers.

PEI Ultem 1010 sits at the top of the FDM material hierarchy for a reason. With a glass transition temperature of 217°C, continuous service capability up to 170°C, inherent flame retardancy rated UL94 V-0, and chemical resistance to automotive fluids, halogenated hydrocarbons, and aqueous solutions — it delivers performance that no amount of annealing or post-processing can extract from PETG, PC, or ABS. This is the material aerospace manufacturers use for flight cabin components, automotive engineers use to replace metal in under-hood applications, and semiconductor labs use for clean-room tooling where ESD protection and thermal stability are both non-negotiable.

PEI is not a beginner material and we won't pretend otherwise. It requires a high-temperature all-metal hotend capable of 370–390°C, a heated enclosure, a bed that can hold 160–200°C, and a filament dryer running before and during every print. The reward for getting the setup right is a printed part that genuinely competes with injection-molded engineering thermoplastics — dimensionally stable, structurally sound at temperatures that would destroy anything below it in the material stack.

If your application demands it, nothing else will do.
